"Since Taekwondo and judo are known and accepted as sports by the Korean government, a different organization was necessary to govern the remaining 31 original styles of Korean martial arts.The masters of these systems can together in 1963, among them were Hapkido and Kuk Sool.The purpose was to unify the Korean martial arts for ranking and certification. Since the Korean government was backing the Korean sport element, it only made sense that the government back where the sports came from, so the Korea Kido Association was founded. Grandmaster In Sun Seo, 10th Dan Kuk Sool Won, a highly recognized and top skilled martialist became President of the prestigious Korea Kido Association. Because of his love for the Koren Martial Arts, and his recognizing that there are very good Korean martial arts outside the country of Korea, he wanted to bring these individuals and groups into the fold and also give them a way to excel even more in Korean martial arts. A United States headquarters for the Korea Kido Association was established on May 31, 1988 in San Francisco. Then following the establishment of the World Kido Federation that unites all Korean martial arts taught by grandmasters, masters and instructors outside of Korea.
U.S. headquarters for the Korea Kido Association was established on May 31, 1966 in San Francisco. Then followed the establishment of the World Kido Federation in 1986 that serve to link all Korean martial arts community taught by masters and instructors outside of Korea to the governing body inside the country. With the establishment of the Han Min Jok Hapkido Association, international individuals and groups can register with a recognized government organization which will provide a permanent documentation of their martial art history. Currently there are 34 active styles of Korean Martial Arts represented by the Hanminjok Hapkido Association are as follows:
